Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 7 Days
Explore Tours
Route Overview
Mount Kilimanjaro offers six recognized routes: Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, and Umbwe. Most of these routes approach the summit from the south, while the Lemosho and Shira routes come from the west. The Rongai Route, however, stands out by approaching from the north.
The Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 7 Days provides a quieter, more remote trekking experience. Since it’s less crowded, climbers can enjoy the wilderness, spotting wildlife like antelope, elephants, and buffalo. This route sees less rain, offering clearer views of the summit. While the path is relatively flat, it lacks the “walk-high, sleep-low” strategy, so climbers should plan extra acclimatization days to avoid altitude sickness.
The Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 7 Days is one of the easiest ways to climb Kilimanjaro. As the only northern approach, it descends along the Marangu Route. The summit night follows the same route as Marangu, heading around Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak. The version described here includes a longer detour to Mawenzi Tarn, adding both challenge and beauty to the journey.
When you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted and brought to The Bristol Cottages B&B for an overnight stay. Your head guide will meet you for a briefing, and gear check and arrange for you to rent any equipment you may require.

The journey begins with a drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate to secure the necessary summit permits. Afterward, we take a scenic road trip to the Rongai Gate trailhead. Along the way, we pass through lush corn and potato fields before starting a gentle ascent through forested areas. These forests are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the striking black-and-white colobus monkeys. By late afternoon, we reach Simba Camp, where you’ll settle in for your first night on the mountain.
The day begins with a morning trek, steadily ascending toward the Second Cave. As we continue, the trail takes us through the scenic moorland, offering stunning views of the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Leaving the main trail behind, we head towards Kikelewa Camp, our destination for the night. Upon arrival, you’ll settle in, enjoy a hearty meal, and rest in preparation for the next day’s adventure.
