Route Overview

Lemosho Route 7 Days is one of the most popular trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its extended itinerary, it allows climbers the opportunity to properly acclimatize to the high altitudes, which enhances the chances of summit success.

Through Lemosho Route 7 Days, The trail begins on the western slopes, offering stunning views and a varied landscape. As climbers journey through lush rainforests, they encounter mystical scenery and ascend the challenging Barranco Wall. This gradual ascent promotes better acclimatization, allowing trekkers to climb higher during the day and descend at night to lower altitudes.

Additionally, the Lemosho Route 7 Days can be completed in either 7 or 8 days. While the 8-day option is ideal for optimal acclimatization, the Lemosho Route 7 Days itinerary still strikes a perfect balance of adventure and scenery, offering climbers a strong opportunity to reach the summit.

Tour Plan

Arrival at Kilimanjaro international airport (JRO), where you will meet an Elem Adventures representative, and transfer to the hotel under the rate. The hotel will provide all the essential for a comfortable stay: cozy rooms, hot water, a swimming pool and internet access. In the evening there will be a briefing with our managers, who will also make sure you are ready to begin the climb.

After breakfast at your hotel, your guide will provide a briefing for the day ahead. From Arusha (1400m), you will embark on a scenic two-hour drive to the Londorossi Park Gate (2100m). Before heading to the gate, you will stop in a nearby village to collect a packed lunch and have the opportunity to purchase bottled mineral water for your hike. The final leg of the journey involves a 45-minute bumpy ride along a forest track, which requires a 4WD vehicle.

Upon reaching the Londorossi Gate, the guides and porters will distribute supplies, and you’ll complete your registration with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA). Now, you’re ready to begin your 3-hour hike into the lush rainforest. Keep an eye out for Colobus monkeys along the way! A break for lunch will be provided as you continue your trek.

By early evening, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Campsite (2750m), where the porters, who will have arrived earlier, will have set up your tent and prepared hot water for drinking and washing. Your chef will then prepare a delicious snack followed by dinner. As night falls, the temperature in the mountains can drop to freezing, so be sure to dress warmly!

Hiking time: 3 hours
Habitat: Montane forest

After an early morning breakfast, you will begin your ascent, leaving the rainforest behind as you climb into the heather moorland zone. Along the way, you will cross several streams and traverse a plateau that leads to Shira 2 Camp (3840m). At this campsite, you’ll be situated next to a stream with a breathtaking view of the Western Breach and its glaciers to the east.

As with the previous night, your tents will be set up upon arrival, and the porters will have hot drinking and washing water ready for you. You’ll enjoy an evening snack, followed by dinner prepared by our chef. Keep in mind that temperatures at this exposed camp can drop below freezing, so be prepared for a chilly night!

Hiking time: 6.5 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Here’s your updated version:

Following an early morning breakfast, you will leave the moorland behind and enter a semi-desert, rocky landscape. After 5 hours of walking east, you will reach the impressive Lava Tower (4630m). A packed lunch will be served at the Tower, and hikers have the option to climb this massive formation, weather permitting. At this stage of the hike, it’s common for hikers to begin feeling the effects of the altitude, such as headaches and shortness of breath.

After lunch, you will descend from Lava Tower (4630m) to Barranco Campsite (3950m). This 680-meter descent is crucial for allowing your body to adjust to the high altitude. The descent to camp takes around 2 hours. The campsite is nestled in a valley below the Breach and the Great Barranco Wall (“Breakfast Wall”). As you settle in, the porters will provide hot drinking and washing water, and dinner will be served while you enjoy the sunset

Hiking time: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Semi-desert

This is a short hiking day focused on acclimatization. After an early morning breakfast, it’s time to tackle the Great Barranco Wall! Though it may look intimidating at first glance, many hikers find this Class 2 route easier than expected. Upon reaching the top of the Wall, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Heim Glacier and a sense of being above the clouds.

The trail then winds through the Karanga Valley, with some ups and downs as you make your way toward the campsite. You will spend the night at Karanga Camp (3950m), where you’ll enjoy a hot dinner and have access to washing water at the site.

Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers
Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, you will begin your ascent. The trail intersects with the Mweka Route, which is the path used for descending on the final two days. After about an hour of hiking, you will reach Barafu Hut, the last water stop for porters, as there is no accessible water at Barafu Camp (4550m). The name "Barafu" means “ice” in Swahili, and the camp is situated on a rocky, exposed ridge.

The tents will be exposed to wind and rocks, so it’s important for hikers to familiarize themselves with the campsite before dark. An early dinner will be served to allow hikers to rest and prepare for the summit attempt later that night. Your guide will give you a detailed briefing on how to prepare for summit night. Make sure to get some rest by 19:00!

Hiking time: 2-3 hours
Distance: Approximately 4 kilometers
Habitat: Alpine desert

Here’s your revised version for your tour:

Your guide will wake you around 23:30 for tea and biscuits, after which you’ll begin your summit attempt. The route heads northwest, and you will ascend over stone scree. Many hikers find this portion of the climb to be the most mentally and physically challenging. After about 6 hours, you will reach Stella Point (5685m) on the crater rim. Here, you’ll be able to enjoy the breathtaking sunrise before continuing your ascent for another 2 hours along a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m).

Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a momentous achievement! You’ll have some time to take photos and enjoy tea before beginning your descent back to Barafu Camp. The hike down to Barafu Camp takes about 3 hours. Once at camp, you can rest and enjoy a hot lunch in the sun. Afterward, you’ll continue descending to Mweka Hut (3100m), following the Mweka Trail through scree, rocks, and moorland, eventually entering the rainforest.

Mweka Camp (3100m) is situated in the upper rainforest, so expect fog and rain. You’ll have dinner, freshen up with washing water, and rest for the night at camp.

Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7-8 hours to descend to Mweka
Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers ascent and 23 kilometers descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

After a well-deserved breakfast, your team will host a big celebration filled with dancing and singing. This is the perfect moment to present your tips to the guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters for their hard work and support.

Once the celebration wraps up, you will begin your descent, which takes about three hours back to Mweka Gate. The National Park requires all hikers to sign their names in the registry to receive their certificates of completion. Hikers who reached Stella Point (5685m) will receive a green certificate, while those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) will be awarded a gold certificate.

After receiving your certificates, you’ll continue the descent for an additional hour (3 kilometers) into Mweka village. From there, you will drive back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can relax and reflect on your incredible achievement.

Hiking time: 3 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Forest

Rest in the hotel before the transfer to the airport for your flight home.
