Route Overview
Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is one of Tanzania’s most fascinating active volcanoes. Located near Lake Natron, this volcanic giant stands at 2,962 meters (9,718 feet) and is the only volcano in the world that produces natrocarbonatite lava. Unlike traditional lava, this rare type appears dark brown or black in liquid form and flows as smoothly as water, with temperatures ranging between 510-600°C—significantly cooler than most lavas.
A Scenic Drive & Cultural Immersion
Your Ol Doinyo Lengai Day Trip starts with a scenic drive through the Great Rift Valley, passing through traditional Maasai villages and dramatic landscapes. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Natron, home to thousands of flamingos that flock to its alkaline waters each year.
Trekking Ol Doinyo Lengai – A True Adventure
For adventure seekers, hiking Ol Doinyo Lengai is a once-in-a-lifetime challenge. The climb typically begins at midnight, allowing trekkers to summit at sunrise when the view is most spectacular. The steep and rugged trail requires stamina, but the rewarding panoramic views of the Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and even Mount Kilimanjaro make it worth the effort.
A Geological Wonder
Ol Doinyo Lengai has erupted about 15 times in the last century, with its most recent eruption in 2013. However, due to its isolated location, the eruptions pose no direct threat to surrounding Maasai communities. Scientists and geologists from around the world visit this site to study its unique lava composition, making it a globally significant landmark.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for this trek is during the dry season (June to October & January to February), when the trails are easier to navigate. A moonlit ascent is recommended, as temperatures drop and the lava glows eerily under the stars.
A Journey to Remember
Whether you’re a hiker, photographer, or nature enthusiast, the Ol Doinyo Lengai Day Trip offers an unforgettable experience. Explore this hidden gem, witness its rare lava flows, and take in the raw beauty of Tanzania’s Great Rift Valley.

Tour Plan
Your adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel, followed by a scenic drive to Lake Natron. Though the journey is long, the breathtaking landscapes along the way make it worthwhile. You’ll pass through Maasai villages, spot local wildlife, and take in the beauty of Tanzania’s rugged terrain.
Upon arrival at Lake Natron Camp, you’ll check in and have time to unwind before setting out on a guided trek to Ngare Sero Waterfall. This hike takes you through a stunning gorge, where you’ll need to cross shallow streams at certain points. To stay comfortable, we recommend wearing sandals or water-friendly footwear.
After exploring the waterfall, your guide will take you to the lake’s shore, where you can photograph its otherworldly landscapes and witness the famous flamingo colonies. As the day winds down, you’ll return to the lodge for dinner and relaxation, preparing for another day of adventure.
At 1:00 a.m., your driver will take you to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai, where your challenging ascent begins. The terrain is steep and rugged, especially in the dark, so it’s crucial to stay close to your guide and follow his lead. The climb is physically demanding, typically taking between 7 to 12 hours, depending on your fitness level and pace. Due to the steep gradient, short breaks every 100 meters are recommended to help with acclimatization.
As you ascend, you’ll take a break for breakfast, replenishing your energy for the final stretch. At the crater rim (2,960 m), you’ll experience an unforgettable moment—listening to the rumbling lava inside the crater of the sacred “Mountain of God”.
The descent is easier but can be deceptively dangerous, as fatigue increases the risk of slips and falls. Moving cautiously is key to avoiding injuries. After sunrise, swapping your fleece for a sun hat is highly recommended to prevent heatstroke.
Upon reaching the foot of the volcano, your driver will be waiting with cold drinks, ready to take you back to camp for a refreshing shower and lunch, before your return journey to Arusha.
